A Custom Lake House Designed for the Future in Austin
Project Overview
Set along a lakeshore outside Austin, this custom home was built for one purpose: to serve multiple generations for decades without showing its age. The homeowners didn't want a vacation property. They wanted a legacy home; one that could handle large family gatherings, maintain durability, and adapt to their needs over time.
The homeowners came to J. Angelo Design Build looking for a design-build partner capable of coordinating the project holistically from early planning through construction. With the scale of the home, the complexity of the site, and the long-term goals for accessibility and livability, they wanted a team that could align architecture, engineering, budgeting, and construction early in the process to create a predictable outcome.
The result is a calm, refined lakefront home that balances clean architectural lines with warm, natural materials and practical, performance-driven design decisions. Every major system, finish, and structural element was selected through the lens of durability, comfort, and low maintenance rather than short-term trends.

A Three-Story Home Built for Lakefront Living
Building directly on a lakeshore required thoughtful planning around weather exposure, circulation, material performance, and long-term maintenance. This home was intentionally designed to perform well over time while still feeling warm, open, and highly livable.
Modern Indoor-Outdoor Connection
A modern indoor-outdoor connection oriented toward the lake shaped the home's overall layout from the earliest planning stages. Large-format windows and doors that maximize natural light and lake views enhance visibility throughout the home while reinforcing the relationship between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. The open kitchen layout, designed for hosting and gatherings, connects effortlessly to the main living areas and adjacent outdoor spaces, allowing the home to function comfortably for both quiet weekends and large family gatherings.
Throughout the property, integrated indoor-outdoor living areas for year-round use expand the usable living space while maintaining a relaxed, livable atmosphere appropriate for a luxury lake home.
High-Performance Building Envelope
Behind the finishes, a high-performance building envelope enhances comfort and energy efficiency by regulating interior conditions and improving long-term performance in the Texas climate. The exterior palette incorporates durable exterior materials selected for lakefront conditions, prioritizing resilience and longevity without sacrificing architectural character. Inside, the home features custom millwork and custom cabinetry throughout, creating consistency across all three floors while supporting both function and organization.
Natural stone finishes selected for longevity are paired with warm wood finishes throughout interior spaces to create a timeless material palette that feels refined without becoming trend-driven or overly delicate.

Designed Around Multi-Generational Gatherings
One of the primary goals for this project was to create a home that could comfortably support large family gatherings while remaining practical for everyday use over the decades.
The floor plan was intentionally designed around multi-generational functionality and layout, allowing different areas of the home to operate cohesively without sacrificing privacy, comfort, or flexibility. Accessibility was also addressed from the beginning rather than treated as an afterthought.
Home Elevator for Aging-in-Place
An elevator integrated into the home for long-term accessibility and aging in place was carefully incorporated into the design without disrupting the home's overall flow or aesthetics. Integrating the elevator required extensive coordination between the structural, architectural, and mechanical systems to maintain clean circulation patterns and efficient use of space across all three levels.
The result is a home designed not only for how the family lives today, but for how they intend to use the property decades into the future.

High-End Construction Across Three Floors
One of the defining architectural elements of the home is the steel stair system, providing durable, efficient access to all three floors. The stair structure acts as both a visual anchor and a critical circulation feature while maintaining a clean, minimal architectural presence.
Adding the Steel Stair System
Executing the stair system required a high degree of precision and coordination. Tight structural tolerances, finish alignment, and integration with surrounding systems all had to be carefully managed to maintain the level of detailing expected throughout the home. More broadly, the project reflects the importance of whole-home system integration across structure, systems, and finishes. From vertical circulation planning to mechanical coordination, every component was evaluated through the lens of constructability, long-term performance, and usability.
The consistency of execution across all three floors, from framing through finish work, reflects the precision craftsmanship and high-detail construction execution that define our approach to custom homes.

A Design-Build Process Focused on Planning
Projects of this scale require more than quality construction. They require a process that aligns design intent, constructability, budgeting, and scheduling well before construction begins.
As a design-build firm, we guide clients through feasibility planning, design coordination, budgeting, and construction as one integrated process. This allows major decisions around structure, circulation, materials, and systems to be resolved early rather than discovered later during construction.
Early Planning and Accessibility
For this Flagship project, that upfront planning proved critical. Accessibility features, structural coordination, circulation planning, and long-term durability goals were all addressed during pre-construction to minimize surprises and create a smoother construction experience overall.
The end result is a home that feels intentional, calm, and well-resolved, not overdesigned or fragile. It reflects the kind of thoughtful, performance-focused custom home we aim to build throughout Austin and the surrounding Hill Country.
